Meal planning for diabetics

When it comes to going on vacations or holidays it can often times seem overwhelming and confusing especially if you are trying to take care of meal planning for diabetics.

I know for me personally I have several diabetics in my family such as my grandmother and it often times can get discouraging trying to make sure we have meals that we all can enjoy but that won’t affect her sugar. For diabetics it can get tricky but the key part is not to let it get to you and impact how you feel about the situation.

When it comes to meal planning for diabetics or her in general I will make my meals ahead of time and not add any sugar to my baked beans, green beans or any other dish until I pull her a few spoonfuls out into a separate container so that she has her own without sugar. After, I remove her some food without the sugar then I can add any type of seasoning that I would like to the rest of the food. This will prevent her from having too much sugar but also allow her to eat what the rest of us is eating without feeling left out.

Meal planning for diabetics can be tricky around the holidays because there is so many different, yummy, sugary foods and deserts to eat and fix so I try to buy sugar substitutes such as Splenda or Sweet in Low and use instead of regular sugar because diabetics are allowed to use sugar substitutes.

Meal planning for diabetics can be rather challenging but by knowing what you can and can’t do is a great start to being able to plan accordingly so that the diabetic doesn’t feel left out and neither does anyone else.

What is type II diabetes?

what is type ii diabetes

What is type II diabetes? Type II is the most common form of diabetes. More and more people are becoming diagnosed with diabetes and many more unaware they are at high risk of developing diabetes. Many people are at a higher risk than others due to their past medical history, ethnicity, race, weight and age. Latinos, Native Americans, African Americans and Mexicans are more susceptible to diabetes than other races. The Elderly age is also more suspectible to diabetes than others due to being older.

In type II diabetes, the body can’t make enough insulin or the cells won’t accept it. Insulin is a must because the body has to have insulin in order to use glucose for energy. The food that you eat is turned into fuel which is what you need to live off of. When your body breaks down the glucose it gives you the energy to keep pushing through and makes it through the day.

Starches such as cereals, pastas, potatoes and other sugary foods are the worst for diabetics because starch turns into pure sugar versus natural sugars such as fresh vegetables and fruits. When you have too much glucose in your body your body can’t break it up fast enough which either causes your insulin to be too much or too little and can signify to the rest of your body how it needs to work harder in order to keep up so that it can regulate everything and keep you healthy and your diabetes maintained.

What is type II diabetes? Type II diabetes is plainly where your body isn’t able to produce enough insulin in order to regulate your body or your body can’t absorb all the insulin you have been making in order to maintain a level of normalcy so that everything can work together.

1500 Calorie Diabetic Diet Plan

When it comes to eating healthy for most people the main concern is excess weight, the 1500 calorie diabetic diet plan can, for diabetics, be a matter of life and death. There are many places where a list of healthy snacks for diabetics can be obtained, as a matter of fact, nearly any doctor can provide the information, but the key to a 1500 calorie diabetic diet plan is its effect on successful glucose regulation.

The body needs glucose since glucose is the fuel for cellular activity. In a normal person even the most sugary and fatty foods will not cause glucose levels to rise beyond acceptable limits because as glucose levels rise the brain signals the pancreas to release a hormone called insulin. Insulin allows glucose to cross over from the blood into the cells to be used as energy, and if there is still too much glucose after cellular energy requirements are met it is stored for future use. In a diabetic, either the pancreas no longer produces insulin or the cells are resistant to the effects of insulin, therefore the glucose level in the blood can rise to harmful levels.

Sugary foods such as candies, sodas, and other sweets can cause the glucose to quickly soar to much higher than acceptable limits and the diabetic should generally stay away from such foods. Starches like those found in white colored foods like whitebread, rice, and potatoes can also make glucose climb rapidly because the starches are broken down into glucose by the body. As a general rule, white colored and sugary foods should be avoided by the diabetic, and even in those who are just seeking to control their weight avoiding such foods can be beneficial. Even though not all foods are bad, the 1500 calorie diabetic diet plan helps with glucose regulation and weight loss.

The 1500 calorie diabetic diet plan is an important part of the overall health plan that every diabetic should follow to maintain healthy blood glucose levels and head off the worst health effects of diabetes.
