Coconut Oil and Diabetes – Health Benefits!

Diabetes has become prevalent with rising obesity and sugar consumption. 8.3% of the entire population in the United States has diabetes. This is approximately 2.8 million adults and children. Moreover, the rate of Americans becoming diabetic doubles every 10 years. Therefore, pharmaceutical companies are capitalizing on this epidemic especially with drugs for type 2 diabetes. However, these drugs are not dealing with real underlying causes. Besides improving the regulation of blood sugar, coconut oil can also eliminate cravings and relieve neuropathy; improve circulation in order to get rid of numbness.coconut oil for diabetes

How does Coconut Oil Reverse the Effects and Symptoms of Diabetes?

Imagine being able to eliminate or reduce the amount of medications you are taking. There are various beneficial properties of coconut oil that make it very effective in reversing the effects and symptoms of type 2 diabetes.

Try using Coconut Oil for Diabetes Control!

It nourishes your body

The digestive system normally converts what we eat into glucose. The glucose is absorbed into the bloodstream hence triggering the production of insulin by the pancreas. Insulin hooks to the cells in order to help bring the glucose into the cells. The cells use glucose as energy. However, with diabetic people, either insulin is not produced or it can’t attach to cells. As a result, the cells can neither absorb nor use glucose.

However, coconut oil can be absorbed by the cells and used as energy even in the absence of insulin. Moreover, the body can use MCFA’s (Middle chain fatty acids) in the same way as glucose without necessarily depending on glucose in order to do so. This gives the pancreas time to heal. In some cases, the pancreas may rest and recover the ability to manufacture insulin.

Boost your Metabolism – Use Coconut Oil for Weight Loss

Due to the problems with the absorption and use of glucose, weight gain and lower energy levels are common problems with most type 2 diabetics. When your cells lack glucose to power them, the metabolic rate drops thus resulting in low energy levels. (We all know that feeling!)  However, coconut oil counters this effect due to its structural composition and the way it is used by the body.  Coconut oil boosts metabolism and as a result, the body burns fat at a faster rate. Moreover, it slows digestion allowing you to feel fuller and energetic for longer.

Coconut Oil for Diabetes Control – Helps Regulate Blood Sugar

In my daily diet, I use coconut oil for diabetes control, as I had to deal with many complications as a result of my body’s inability to regulate the blood sugar levels. These problems mainly include constant hunger, obesity, food cravings and hypoglycemia. However, I realized that my blood sugar level which was usually 80 to 90 points above normal reduced within half an hour after taking a teaspoon of coconut oil. This helped reduce my cravings and hunger. Moreover, it helped me avoid other life threatening complications such as severe hypoglycemia, diabetes shock and loss of consciousness.

Is Coconut Good for Diabetes, Coconut oil has a very low GI (glycemic index) of about 35 which helps prevent fluctuations in blood sugar by balancing the amount of insulin produced with the amount of sugar in the bloodstream in order to improve glucose control and reverse insulin resistance.

Neuropathy and Blood Circulation

Good blood circulation is very important for diabetics. Many diabetics who experience numbness in their limbs get cuts or infections on the limbs without realizing it until it is too late. This can lead to serious complications. Coconut oil helps to get rid of numbness by improving blood circulation.

My feet and legs used to get numb constantly! However, feeling returned to my feet and legs within ten days of eating 2 teaspoons of coconut oil! Therefore, eating 2-3 teaspoons of coconut oil per day can help reduce or even eliminate tingling and diabetic neuropathy (nerve pain) that occurs in the limbs.

Improving brain function

This is vital especially for type 1 diabetics. The MCFA’s (Middle chain fatty acids) found in coconut oil improves brain function. The medium chain triglycerides help improve and preserve brain function under ideal hypoglycemic condition. However, using coconut oil for diabetes control, helps preserve the brain without causing the deadly hyperglycemia.

High levels of blood sugar can lead to nerve damage and/or poor blood supply over time which leads to problems with arousal ad/or achieving an orgasm. Moreover, high blood sugar leads to lack of natural lubrication which makes sex painful and/or difficult. However, female sexual dysfunction can also be caused by a wide range of psychological reasons.

  1. Common Signs of Diabetes in Women – Frequent urination and dehydration

Someone with diabetes experiences frequent urination as the body tries to eliminate the excess glucose through urine. Besides eliminating the excess sugar, frequent urination also leads to loss of large amounts of water and the individual may also suffer from dehydration. Therefore, women with diabetes may experience frequent urination and excessive thirst throughout the day.

  1. Polyphagia

Diabetes Symptoms in WomenExcessive eating which is also known as polyphagia is a typical symptom in women suffering from type 2 diabetes. Someone suffering from type 2 diabetes has a high level of insulin in the body. Since insulin stimulates hunger, too much insulin makes the person feel hungry more often and eat more.

  1. PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome)

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a condition in which the number of cysts in the ovaries is larger than normal. PCOS is linked with high levels of insulin which is very common in people with type 2 diabetes and people who are overweight. Although diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome does not mean you are suffering from diabetes, the condition is linked with a high risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

  1. Emotional Symptoms and Signs of Diabetes in Women

Diet Soda and Diabetes

Although replacing regular soda with diet soda may spare you some empty calories, it still increases risk of type 2 diabetes and shouldn’t be include in the diet for diabetes. New studies from Israel have

diet soda and diabetesfound that artificial sweeteners including aspartame, sucralose and saccharine alter glucose metabolism because they interfere with the balance of healthy bacteria in the gut. This leads to glucose intolerance which might cause diabetes.

What is Diet Soda?

Diet soda is a carbonated beverage that is sweetened with artificial sweeteners such as cyclamate, aspartame, sucralose, acesulfame-k or saccharin instead of sugar. Most popular sugar-sweetened beverages in the market have diet or light versions such as Pepsi max, diet Coke, Diet Soda Diabetes sprite zero, etc. These beverages are sugar free and calorie free which is primarily meant to help people lose weight, avoid tooth decay, and prevent sugar related diseases such as diabetes and metabolic syndrome. However, evidence for these drinks helping against such conditions is nonexistent. In fact, the latest studies show that drinking diet soda increases the risk of gaining weight and developing diabetes.

The Relationship Between Diet Soda and Diabetes

A new large scale study demonstrates the connection between diet soda and diabetes. French researchers have found that drinking one 12 ounce can of diet soda per week increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 33%. However, participants who drank 100% fruit juices had no additional risk. This study was also published in the American Journal of Clinical nutrition and it covered 66,118 adults whose health and dietary habits were observed for 15 years (from 1993 to 2007). Therefore, this large scale study over many years holds more credence than the previous smaller scale studies.

Artificial Sweeteners and Diabetes

Researches explained the connection between artificial sweeteners and diabetes,  by stating that one of the most commonly used artificial sweeteners known as aspartame causes an increase in the blood glucose levels (glycaemia) and hence a rise in insulin levels compared to the insulin produced by fruit sugar (sucrose).

Artificial Sweeteners and DiabetesDiet soda contains the chemical aspartame which is broken down by the human body to formaldehyde. Formaldehyde has been banned from being around children because it is too toxic and aspartame can cause kidney damage and liver damage. Moreover, aspartame stimulates the production of cortisol, the hormone that encourages fat storage in the body. Therefore, people who drink diet soda actually store more fat than they lose! Since the Hormone cortisol is a stress hormone, drinking diet soda causes an increase in the risk of stress related problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and depression.

Diet soda and Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is a clustering of risk factors which occur together and increase your risk of stroke, heart disease and diabetes. These risk factors include;

  • Increased blood pressure
  • Abnormal cholesterol levels
  • Excess body fat especially around the waist (belly fat)
  • High blood glucose levels

Why not Juice some Nice Fresh Veggies!

Although having one of these conditions does not mean you have metabolic syndrome, having any of these conditions increases the risk of serious disease. The risk is even greater when these risk factors occur in combination. Diet Soda and Diabetes, really don’t make a good combination, so what should diabetics drink? Perhaps find another alternative like good old fashioned water or fresh made veggie juice!
