Glucose Intolerance Test?

Glucose Intolerance TestIf you have a family history of diabetes chances are that at some point you will have to take a glucose intolerance test. If your doctor recommends a glucose intolerance test, don’t worry, it isn’t the kind of test you have to study for or really even the kind of test you can fail. A glucose intolerance test is designed to test the way your body metabolizes the glucose (sugars) that you ingest.

The most common type of glucose intolerance test is the oral glucose tolerance test. For this test you will usually be asked to fast for several hours before the test begins. Upon arriving for your test your blood sugar will be checked, then you will be given a glucose solution to drink. You blood will then are sampled at intervals after you have ingested the glucose solution so that the doctor can see how well your body manages the glucose.

Blood Glucose Ranges

Blood Glucose RangesBlood glucose ranges are usually between 60 and 120 in a person with a normal metabolism. If a person has a metabolic dysfunction such as diabetes where the body either does not produce sufficient quantities of insulin or is resistant to the insulin produced the blood glucose ranges can swing wildly and at times can become so out of control as to be debilitating, sometimes even leading to coma or death. Prolonged, but less severe abnormal blood glucose ranges can damage the kidneys, liver, and even the heart, and can be a contributing factor to the development of glaucoma.

The Normal Glucose Level Range

Normal Glucose Level RangeWhen it come to the normal glucose level range, there are no hard and fast rules since like everything else in life each person’s individual case is different, but as a general rule the normal glucose level range is between 60 and 120. Of course these numbers can be influenced by any number of factors including weight, age and other health conditions and there is no real way to say that this is or isn’t normal without the advice of a physician and long term tracking and trending of blood glucose levels. Nobody is better at maintaining their normal glucose level range than diabetics.

Normal Blood Glucose Ranges and Other Ranges

Normal Blood Glucose RangesNormal blood glucose ranges, normal cholesterol ranges, normal calcium ranges, nowadays it seems as if modern life depends on keeping all these “ranges” in some sort of arcane numerical boundaries in order to live long and happy. Not long ago no one worried about whether their normal blood glucose ranges were normal or not, they got up in the mornings, ate a pound of greasy bacon, three fried eggs, gravy, a couple of biscuits and washed it all down with a cup of strong coffee. Then it was off to work.

An Acceptable Blood Glucose Level

Acceptable Blood Glucose LevelMany people who suffer from diabetes wonder what life would be like with a constantly acceptable blood glucose level. Diabetes Mellitus usually referred to simply as diabetes can be any one of a group of metabolic diseases in which the affected person has a measured blood glucose which is outside the range for an acceptable blood glucose level. This is as a result of either the body does not produce enough insulin, or the cells do not respond to in a normal fashion to the insulin which is produced. Glucose, which is used for energy by every cell of the body, can also become quite toxic if levels build up in the blood.
